Don't risk your wedding day on a unknown photographer!

Weddings are expensive, and these days everyone is trying to save money where they can.

Now there is a time and a place to cut costs for your big day, but let me give you a few reasons why you should let a professional handle your wedding photography.

Your wedding day is a once in a lifetime event that you have spent months, or sometimes years planning for and imagining.

After all is said and done, no one will remember the little things like the free kegs running dry a little early, or the fact that you had chicken instead of the beef.  But your wedding photos will be with you for the rest of your life.  They will be displayed at your home, your parents homes, at anniversaries and such for many many years to come.

With the rise of digital everyone is a photographer.

And while this can be very true, and your friend with the high priced camera does take wonderful photos, not everyone is a wedding photographer!  I once heard wedding photography referred to as the red headed step child of the photographic world.  If you tell a fashion photographer, or a landscape photographer, or a photojournalist that your a wedding photographer you kind of get a chuckle out of them.  Wedding photography takes a very special breed of photographer.  We shoot portraits, fashion, product photography, architectural photography, and even some landscape photography.  And it is all done one the fly under the watchful eye of the bride, the mother of the bride, the mother in law, and about a hundred other people.  It is a high stress environment where you do not get to do re shoots.  If you don't get the shot the first time, its gone!

That being said here are a few things that a wedding photographer has and can provide that your inexpensive friend can not.

A written contract spelling out exactly what you are getting for said price.

You know before had exactly what is included.  Digital files, editing, proof books, albums.  Your photographer should have everything listed that is included.  If you think your not going to need any of these things....  On my wedding I said the same thing, and ended up with about 70 hours into editing a wrinkle out of my beautiful brides wedding gown that cause a shadow down the front.  Things come up, so know what is included.

Talking about the unexpected coming up...

Your local pro is insured for mishaps like injury or property damage during shooting.  If someone trips over a tripod and takes out the baby grand piano in the church you do not want to be the one left holding the bag at the end of the day.

In wedding photography experience is everything!

Weddings are never exactly the same, and everything moves at a very fast pace during the day.  Someone who does this for a living knows very well how to manage a schedule, manage the 20 plus members of the wedding party, and the family while still keeping everything running smoothly.  It is one thing to photograph couples, kids, and the occasion family portrait.  Wedding formals can be down right scary if you don't know what you are doing, and the last thing you need is the shot of the great grandparents being missed in the shuffle.

Equipment isn't everything, but it can make a world of difference.

A professional leaves nothing to chance.  They might carry the same camera your friend does, but they have at least one back up if not more.  And anything else that may or may not be needed.  While your friends equipment fits in a nice backpack, mine personally fills a full size suv.  We tend to go overboard.  I have enough lights to illuminate a small arena, reflectors, stands, stools, backdrops, props.  I also shoot every wedding with another photographer who carries all of her own gear as well, and when that isn't enough we bring in more help.

Turn around on your photos.

A professional photographer wants you to be happy with them and their product.  Your word of mouth reviews are what is going to drive their business.  Therefore they do everything they can to get you your wedding photos in a timely fashion.  Your friend is working two jobs, and might not even look at them for a couple weeks.  I personally believe that some of the first images anyone sees of your wedding should be mine.  If the wedding reception is done at midnight, by 1am I have a gallery up and have it tagged to your facebook.

All in all, there are many ways to save money on your wedding! Your photography shouldn't be one of them!

The photographer you hires work will be with you forever.  Make the most out of it.  im not saying spend 10 thousand on your photography, but hire a pro!  Do your homework, and be proud of your wedding!
